Should I Keep My Child Home Today?

Sometimes it is difficult to know if your child should attend classes or stay at home for the day. Children cannot come to school with a fever (temperature of 100.0ºF or more), vomiting from illness or diarrhea. When your child comes to school ill, they can spread their illness to others as well as be susceptible to secondary infections themselves. Your child cannot perform at their best academically if they are sick and need time at home for rest and recovery.

When Can My Child Return To School?

Your child cannot return to school until they have been fever, vomiting or diarrhea free for 24 hours without medication.

Hand Washing & Hand Sanitizer

Hand washing is still the single most effective way to prevent illness according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Wash your hands before eating, after using the restroom, when you cough or sneeze, or whenever they are obviously dirty. The CDC recommends vigorous scrubbing with warm, soapy water for at least 15 seconds. While you wash, sing a verse of "Happy Birthday" or Yankee Doodle Dandy!”

When soap and water are not available, hand sanitizer is a good option. Hand sanitizers do contain alcohol and can pose a danger to children. With the safety of our children in mind, we ask that if parents would like their children to have access to hand sanitizers, please send a small bottle with your child to school labeled with the student's name. They should give this bottle to their teacher who will monitor its use with your child.
